The Prestige, Comics, Life, etc.

** No, I haven't seen Heroes yet, though not for lack of interest. Probably end up getting the Season One DVD and watching it when I retire, along with the many other movies and TV shows I've missed over the past couple of years. I did see The Prestige, though, and loved it. (Bought the novel, which I just started reading, mistakenly thinking it was by the Christopher Priest from comics.) Christopher Nolan is up there with M. Night Shyamalan and David Fincher as one of my favorite directors, and Christian Bale solidified his standing as my favorite Batman/Bruce Wayne. Hugh Jackman's turn as his own double was quite possibly his best acting yet, showing a range I didn't realize he had. Makes me think the Wolverine spinoff might actually have a shot at being good.

** I finally stopped by Midtown Comics last week and picked up six weeks of comics, which was a wallet-bending amount even with my pared-down pull list. Some pleasant surprises in the mix, including ASP's intriguing The Killer #1, a moody take on a philosophical assassin with some exquisite artwork; the delightfully whacked-out Casanova #5, which continues to successfully walk the tightrope between smart and smarmy; and Captain America #23 and Daredevil #90, which continue Ed Brubaker's run as the best writer currently working at the House of Ideas.

** We're in the middle of rearranging our apartment to maximize our use of increasingly limited space, including an additional bookcase so my wife and I can each have our own. I pulled a number of TPBs out of random corners and now have an almost floor-to-ceiling collection of graphic goodness easily at hand! I'm going to have to cull a few marginal titles to make space for future purchases as I'm about halfway to focusing primarily on TPBs.

** Met with Jon and Howard from PopCultureShock for drinks last week and am looking forward to being able to jump back into a regular writing gig by the beginning of the year. Not sure in what capacity yet, or what it will mean for CBC, but I'm hoping to be able to strike a balance between the two, focusing on the resource and opinion aspects of this site, while tackling longer reviews, features and interviews over there. For those of you still checking in here, stay tuned! :-)

Finally got around to reading #5 and I'm still loving what David Petersen is doing here. ASP publishes quality work, and Mouse Guard is one of their crown jewels.

The problem with going long stretches without hitting your LCBS and not surfing the comics interweb is that you miss out on stuff you might have been interested in, like this Sock Monkey mini-series I had no idea existed. Might have to TPB it.

I vaguely remember reading about this and will at least give it a flip-through.

Just say "no" to Civil War. I am. The side stories are much better written, and the "best" of any particular issue on the main story is easily accessible online. (Side note: My dislike for Millar's writing has even made Red Son, which I'd heard such positive things about, absolutely unreadable.)

Magazines
Back Issue #19, $6.95

I think even if I stopped reading comics altogether, I'd still pick up Back Issue for the warm, nostalgic feeling it gives.

Marvel Pacts with No Equal for Moon Knight

Marvel Studios, a division of Marvel Entertainment, Inc. and Vancouver based production company, No Equal Entertainment, have entered into an agreement to develop a live-action television series based on Marvel's cult favorite Moon Knight. The announcement was made today by David Maisel of Marvel Entertainment and Larry Sugar of No Equal Entertainment.

...Moon Knight's blend of action, the supernatural, and complex, intriguing characters will serve as the foundation for the live-action series.

"'Moon Knight' has all the elements for an engaging television series. No Equal Entertainment has a real passion for the project and an amazing vision of how to bring the character and storyline to life that will appeal to action and sci-fi enthusiasts," said Mr. Maisel.

I doubt any big names will be involved in the cast, but I'd love to see The Wire's Dominic West as Marc Spector.

After a six-week hiatus, my weekly look at select comic books being released Wednesday, 10/4/06, returns. The first issue of this one was pretty good, but I think my hiatus from the blogiverse might have cost me my spot on Boom!'s comp list, so no advance reviews this week.

Picked up Cross Bronx #1 last night but haven't read it yet, but Brandon and Oeming together should be a good mix. If they pull a Fort Apache on the Bronx, though, I'll have to write them off. Fear Agent moving to Dark Horse is great news, and while Remender has said it's not in the works, I'm wouldn't be disappointed at all if Strange Girl made the jump, too. Dummy's Guide... #1 was a fun read, and Villains has been one of the more intriguing bad guy-perspective comics in a while.

Books
Writing For Comics With Peter David SC, $19.99

I usually prefer the group perspective for writing books like these (though Stephen King's On Writing is an excellent read), but David's Fallen Angel and X-Factor are so damn good that I just may check this one out.

As it is, I'm still four or five weeks behind on picking up comics and as Fossen mentions, "No comics also makes comic bloggery difficult, and it's not like my mind is here anyways."

Feels Like It's Been Forever...

There are currently 758 new posts in my "Comics" folder on Bloglines, and 202 new emails in my Gmail inbox.

I am once again three weeks behind on picking up my weekly haul from Midtown Comics, the second time that's happened in the past six weeks.

I haven't been online for personal reasons (other than a couple of times for fantasy football) for more than 10 minutes at any given time in the past three weeks.

Except for yesterday, when I had no choice, I haven't made it home from work before 7:30pm in the past two weeks.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Madden 2007, Grey's Anatomy and a stack of unread graphic novels are the closest I get to an escape these days.

No idea when I'll be back in the loop, but if I owe you an email, especially related to PopCultureShock, you have my sincerest apologies. Speaking of PCS, in case you're wondering: yes, the redesign finally happened; no, I'm no longer the Senior Comics Editor; yes, everything's cool and I hope to contribute occasional content when life settles down again; no, I have no idea what the status is of most of the other contributorswho have disappeared since the redesign.

NRAMA: If you had one takeback, and no reasons needed to explain your action, and could reach back in time and adjust/tweak/correct/remove one project, what would it be?

So, yeah, Dan and Omar really came through with the content during my break, huh? Dorks!

Life at Casa de Gonzalez will hopefully be settling down over the next month or so -- both the Mrs. and I are in the midst of long-overdue career changes; plus, both kids are heading back to school and the always fun issue of after-school care -- so I should be able to hit the books and start blogging again with a renewed sense of purpose that only a few weeks away from the blogiverse can give you. I've read a lot of surprisingly good stuff recently, though, the majority of which doesn't tie in to Infinite Civil War, but even a few of those that did were pretty good, too!

I've got a ton of reviews to crank out over the next few weeks, all good stuff that you should read, including Stagger Lee; Bluesman Vols. 1-3; Fables Vols. 1-3; Little White Mouse Omnibus; Bumperboy and the Loud, Loud Mountain; Justice League of America #1; Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters #2 (Gonzo the Mechanical Bastard?!?!); Heroes for Hire #1; X-Factor #10; Batman and the Mad Monk #1; The Incredible Hulk #97; Blue Beetle #6; Green Lantern Corps #3; and Daredevil #88.
